When I got interested in photography 17 years ago, I read everything I could get my hands on, form photo magazines to just about every book that had anything different to say. And in the end I found John Hedgecoe's Photographer's Handbook to be the most useful, and inspiring book to browse through. The photographic images in the book are excellent, and unique.... the types that makes me think. I explained a lot of uncommon, as well as all standard photo processing, even the use of infra-red slide films! that's pretty rare, but quite interesting at the same time. These days most technical photography book does not get me excited about taking photos, but this one is different. It teaches, and inspires at the same time.
