Seller's Description:
Very good. Clean, tight pages and binding. Very little shelf wear. No DJ as issued. 184 p. illus. (part. col. ) 27 cm. The American wilderness. Includes Illustrations. Bibliography: p. 180. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. In the American Wilderness series compiled by Time-Life with their usual excellent photography and narrative.
"The Okefenokee Swamp" is one of 27 volumes in the American Wilderness series published by Time-Life books in the 1970s. Okefenokee is a Native American word meaning "trembling earth." This volume examines the plants and animals which inhabit the swamp. Humans also lived in the swamp until the 1930s when it became a national wildlife refuge. The stories of these swampers are quite fascinating. To date, I have read six of the American Wilderness books and this is my favorite one. Franklin Russell's engrossing narrative and the numerous photographs take you on a journey through this 681 square mile wilderness on the Georgia/Florida border. The only things missing are the heat, humidity, and mosquitoes. This book is a vivid portrait of a small, enchanted corner of the Old South.
