Basis for the 1941 film directed by Jean Renoir, and featuring Walter Brennan, Walter Huston, Anne Baxter, and Dana Andrews, and with appearances by John Carradine and Ward Bond. Also remade in 1952 by Jean Negulesco with Jean Peters, Jeffrey Hunter, Constance Smith, and Walter Brennan (this time in a different role). Bell was killed in 1944 while serving at sea during the war (the subject of the aforementioned clipping), and very few signed copies of this title appear.
