Summers, Jr was called at my request in consultation at this time, which was the 17th of September. After a care ful examination of the patient he concluded that there was nothing that could be done except to rely on a heart tonic. And strych nia and digitalis were given every three hours. This was carried to its full physio logical extent. It was some time before she rallied. But, as she did and the swelling subsided. The tumor became more promi. Nent, covering a space. As felt through the abdominal walls. Nearly as large as the palm of a man's hand. And in a sim ilat proportion through the vaginal wall. Later it seemed to be pendulous, but there was present at this time. As there had been from my first acquaintance with her, ascites; and to this fact I believe the lady owes much of her present comfort. For otherwise the tumor would have become adherent to the lower part of the pelvis. At or about this time. The question of an operation for the removal of the growth came up, and I informed the husband that the only hope, on account of her heart, was her age; that not only was there great danger to life in the strong under a like operation, but in this case it would likely be sure death. During October Dr. Neville saw the case by my request, and gave an unfavorable prognosis, in which he did not difler from my opinion. In November the request was made to me that Drs. J. E. Summers. Jr and A. F. Jonas see the case with me. And arrange ments were completed for a conference on the ssd. Both gentlemen bore me out in the opinion that an operation would be useless, and thought that she could not live long under any circumstances.
