The cardiac affections I am going to bring under your notice to-night are not very interesting because not danger ous. I have lumped them together under the name of Stammering Heart, for I think that title best indicates their character and importance. Though as a rule they are not dangerous they are extremely disagreeable, and often cause a great deal of anxiety and alarm to the patient and the doctor. What constitutes a stammering heart is irregular action, without ascertainable organic disease, valvular or muscular. I am not aware that the name stammering has been applied to these affections, but they have been described under other appellations. Thus Dr. Latham: What can be said of palpitations of the heart, and intermissions and irregularities of its beats which come and go during a man's whole existence, neither originating in any known disease, nor terminating in any, nor abridging in any measure the duration of life? They must mean something, but we know not what. We may call them sympathetic, but it must be in a very lax sense. (latham's Works, Syd. Soc., ii.
