Seller's Description:
Not Stated. Very Good Indeed. The first edition of this topographical guide to Cumberland. Profusely illustrated, with many plates and a large folding plan. A scarce work, being the two volumes bound as one. Written by the British topographer, William Hutchinson. Hutchinson is known for his work on Durham which was founded on George Allan's manuscript collections. He also wrote 'A View of Northumbeland with an Excursion to the Abbey of Mailross in Scotland' and 'Newcastle'. With a list of subscribers to the start and the a list of subscriber's names received since the previous list was printed. With a frontispiece and eighteen plates to volume I and a frontispiece and eleven plates to volume II, including one large folding plan. Numerous vignettes to the second volume. Lacking the list of plates to the rear. ESTC number T139564. A lovely eighteenth century guide to Cumberland. In a full tree calf binding. Rebacked, with the original boards preserved. Externally, very smart with just some minor bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Closed tears to the large folding plan to volume II at the margin and running three and a half centimetres into the plan. Crease to the final leaf, which also has a small amount of rubbing. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots. Very Good Indeed.
