An enemy frigate is outward bound to play havoc with the vital British whaling trade, and must be stopped at all costs. Racing against time, Captain Jack Aubrey and his crew must chase the USS Norfolk as she rounds Cape Horn, pursuing her into the Great South Sea and beyond. Following the equator, ahead of them lies not only the natural wonders of the Galapagos but also a succession of disasters - men overboard, castaways, typhoons, shipwrecks, to say nothing of murder and criminal insanity. In a deadly game of cat and mouse with their American foes, will Jack Aubrey and his crew triumph, despite the odds? 'If O'Brian's novels have become a cult, this is because they are truly addictive. . . They are, quite magnificently, adventure yarns whose superb authenticity never distracts from the sheer thrill of the action.' CAROLINE MOORE, Sunday Telegraph 'I love these books . . . They will sweep you away and return you delighted, increased and stunned' NICOLA GRIFFITH, NPR

An uncommonly collectible copy. Cunningham A19a. The Aubrey-Maturin series is a sequence of nautical historical novels-20 completed and one unfinished-set during the Napoleonic Wars and centering on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship's surgeon (and spy), Stephen Maturin. This tenth installment continues the story of Aubrey's exploits during the American War of 1812. The novel provided some episodes for the 2003 Peter Weir film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Seller's Description:
None. Near Fine in Fine jacket. A fine example of Patrick O'Brian's tenth Aubrey-Maturin series, an immensely popular navy historical fiction sequence. The first edition, first impression of this work, with the second state dustwrapper. In the original price-clipped dustwrapper, with the publisher's price sticker of £9.95 to the front flyleaf. 'The Far Side of the World' is the tenth novel in O'Brian's 'Aubrey-Maturin' historical fiction series, set in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Written by Patrick O'Brian, an English novelist who is best known for this series of novels. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original price-clipped dustwrapper. Externally, fine. Spots to the fore edge. Dustwrapper is fine, with the publisher's price sticker to the front flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean and just a very few light spots, mostly to the first and last few pages. Near Fine.
This is another in the wonderful series of 20 maritime adventure/spy/battle/love stories created by Patrick O'Brian. Whenever possible, I recommend obtaining the single copy version of this series. The larger combined novels are poorly edited.
My only complaint: O'Brian died before bringing this narrative to a satisfying close. He had nearly done with Captain Jack Aubrey, but a whole new adventure awaited the complex Doctor Steven Maturin. Great reads!
