Walker, a white man, gamely tries to stop their killing of boys and girls and their parents in 1874 in central Kentucky. Real U. S. Secret Service spy, Roy Bauer, investigates the Klan at the request of the U. S. Attorney General. In the process he watches them murder Walker, a man whom he admires. The outcome of the murder is that federal troops clash with the Kentucky militia and almost spark another edition of the War Between the States. In the process of investigation Roy meets Sheba, the pretty and mysterious young woman who seems to be wherever Roy is. During the investigation, Roy, a German-American, learns about himself, his new country, and about Sheba. And he gets a graduate course in revenge.
