Pastel is a fine artist's chalk made from moist pigments pressed into sticks and dried. It was used by great masters of art such as Degas and Cassat. This book contains 72 introductory lessons in painting nature with pastels, using the art of the author, S. Allyn Schaeffer. Basic principals of composition are covered well and there are excellent photographic references to the scene being painted.
The step-by-step instructions oh how to translate a scene in nature into a pastel painting are clear and easy to follow. I appreciate how the artists uses a limited palette because pastels are expensive and the beginning artist is not likely to have many variations of one color. Much more depth can be achieved in pastel than is reached for here, but for the beginning or intermediate pastel artist this is an excellent book. It would make a wonderful Christmas gift for any budding artist.
