The book has 50 different examples, each which follows the same outline. First, it presents a photo and then discusses problems associated with creating a painting from the photo. Following this, the painting is present, sometimes with a step-by-step demonstration but mostly with only the finished paintings or the finished painting with a couple of details. The author's style is a loose realism.
Most of the material is fairly obvious if an artist takes time to look at the photo. However, some hints are very useful, especially those on colors. The author covers water from streams in snow to close-ups of ocean waves to foggy swamps. It might have been better if he had replaced some photos, such as a close-up of grass with drops of water, with photos of waves or ripples in ponds. (I bought this book looking for help on painting ripples in ponds, but this book had no such demostrations.)
One big disappointed is the assignments. Often these are so general, such as try oil painting on watercolor paper, that it really doesn't help learn how to paint water.
A beginner would do better with another book on technique as there are only a few paragraphs on oil painting techniques. A more experienced painter might find a few tidbits helpful, but an advanced painter probably would not find much use here.
Overall, I barely can recommend this book, based mainly on two or three of the lessons which I found useful.
