Figure painting in 1973
Douglas R. Graves offers a good, full introduction to figure painting in oil as it was practiced and taught by many professional painters in the mid-twentieth century. After initial surveys of materials, techniques, proportions, and anatomy, he turns to procedures for the individual parts of the body, beginning with the head and ending with the feet, followed by demonstrations of standing, seated , and reclining figures. This body of the book is illustrated only in black and white, but has the advantage of richly illustrating the role of tonal values in figure depictions. Graves is very open and direct in recounting his procedures, and offers good practical pointers for the beginner. The book concludes with thirty pages of full color demonstrations of various specific figure compositions emphasizing warm and cool colors and individual skin tones in producing finished works. This is a good book to start with; it is also historically interesting to more advanced painters and is the product of much experience.
