Qian Qichen played a direct role in some of the most dramatic moments in recent Chinese history -- including standoffs, efforts to build alliances, and historic summits -- and here he recounts these episodes from behind the scenes. Having witnessed and influenced high-powered political crossroads, he shows just how global relationships are delicately maintained through rarely seen negotiations. Qichen's remembrance covers world-changing events, including the thawing of China's relationship with the Soviet Union; Nelson Mandela's visit to China after his release from prison; the normalization of Sino-Indonesian relations; and the transfer of Hong Kong. As China continues to rise on the world stage, Qichen offers an inside look at its politics and relationships to other countries, helping us understand the past, present, and future of one of the world's greatest powers.

The book presents an intact discourse of China's diplomacy to get recognition or normalize relation with rest of the world. In this process, China very brilliantly played her role to convince the world to believe in China's 'one country two system' theory. Nevertheless, China also warn the world that it would never accept the concept like 'One China, and 'One Taiwan' policy. Apart from this recognition and normalization, Qian Qichen as a diplomat and foreign minister also very beautifully elaborates the security concerns of the Cold War and late 20th century. The book also demonstrates the distant vision of China's diplomacy when she sought to develop the relationship with developing countries especially African countries. Writer draws only ten such events in this regard.
Qian, to a large extent, illustrates the historiography of relation with USSR and United States. The book also highlights the China relations with Japan, South Korea and Indonesia and eulogizes success of Chinese diplomacy. Interestingly, Qian also mentions China's diplomacy success in Africa.
The book presents a very lucid and comprehensive picture of China's foreign policy. Moreover, the book is written by a foreign minister, which provides an authenticity to the book.
