SUNBURNT SKETCHES of AFRICA SOUTH, EAST and WEST in PENCIL PAINT and PROSE, by KENT COTTRELL.
This book contains a wealth of beauty, is most informative, and, importantly, records for posterity descriptions about an age which was fast disappearing during the last century. It is thus significant historically, and is also a pleasure to behold.
A portrait by Kent Cottrell is the work of a skilled artist, but, as so many of her works are the product of her ten-year sojourn in Africa, [ c1945-1955] she has bequeathed to us a priceless gift of enduring importance.
The author of this book came to South Africa at a time when the continent was still in a relatively "unspoiled" state, with it's indigenous peoples living - [to a substantial extent] - in their traditional manner, in an environment (i.e. in their kraals) - largely unaffected by 'foreign' influence. However, it was at a time too, when the ?Winds of Change? were gathering momentum.
Arriving fresh from a life in London, the impact of this unique rural life enabled her - as an artist - to assess and evaluate the simple beauty she met with.
Her undoubted talents enabled her to record afresh, salient matters untainted by local, preconceived, or historically biased attitudes. She was able to translate the beauty and character of these indigenous people, into - not only notable works of art, but also to depict for all time, characteristics unique to them. Her sensitivity is refreshing.
I was impressed by the book?s accuracy of detail , taken so much for granted during the first fifty years of my life, before emigrating from South Africa in 1964. Much of the territories covered in this book are familiar to me.
With that perspective, I can only admire the Author?s sense of truth and attention to detail. Owning two ?Cotteralls?, beadwork of N?delebe, Zulu and Transkei tribes, and other genuine artifacts, enables me to make this observation. We recently bought a copy of each of her books. Their illustrations and her written work compliment and enrich the background to our own Family History Project, the aims of which are to provide future generations with ?a taste of Africa?, the while not only paying tribute to our forefathers, but also, to help explain why they acted as they did -- [?1964? for example, in our case]. ==================== Reviewed by B.W.
