English summary: St. Stephen in Vienna was a construction site for over 300 years, so everyday church life always had to be inventive. Barbara Schedl illuminates the history of its medieval architecture for the first time, including liturgical practice, and shows the church as it was seen, built, and used by its contemporaries. Over several centuries St. Stephen grew and fulfilled various functions: parish church to the city's population, representative object to the local rulers, and finally bishop's church. The building site has been an important economic factor for the city for generations and remained accessible for services during construction. To this purpose, finished and semi-finished sections, as well as still extant parts of the old church were used, partitioned off with wooden slats and covered with shingles; windows were often covered with animal skins. Celebrations of mass, processions, hymn, organ music, and the ringing of the bells, all had to adapt to the ongoing building process, which is why mobile objects such as altars, organ, and sermon stage were repeatedly moved. Against this background Barbara Schedl investigates the questions: How can the building process of the church be traced through the written sources? Which building plans and concepts were envisioned by the principals and the city's population? And how was the construction financed? Through thorough source studies, the author provides insight into the construction phases, the organization of the building site, and liturgical practice during the construction of this Gothic church.
