On n October day in 1759, there met on the green Mr. Alexander Carlyle, the minister of Inveresk, and Mr. John Home, and Mr. George Laurie of Loudon--a young minister, who afterwards was helpful to Robert Burns. There, too, was a bsg stalwart youth of six feet three, standing substantially on thtckset legs, encased in old-fashioned jack-boots.1 This was Jamc Macpherson, tutor to young Graham of Balgowan, known afterwards to history as Lord Lynedoch, who was staying tt the wells. A letter of introduction from Adam Ferguson had made the tutor known to John Home, who was always glad to make himself pleasant and useful to any one. They discussed that day many things, among them Gaelic poetry, customs, and superstitions, and the young Highlander mentioned that he had some pieces of Celtic poetry in his possession.
