They have forgotten or never knew the planet they live on can be a sometimes-violent piece of work, and this violence is a natural reorganizing occurrence, not some mythical God striking out. The mental acceptance of this fact is more than some people can deal with and they sometimes end their lives prematurely, rather than accept the true explanation of it.
