While the men prevailed, in the end it was the ship that was the true hero, even after being ravaged by five Kamikazes and countless bombs off the shores of Iwo Jima in 1945. Her ability to stay afloat due to the heroic efforts of the crew should live in infamy. This novel, in part, is a tribute to their sacrifice.
