The X-rays had exactly the same media to traverse in order to reach the sensitive layer of the photographic plate and the barium platino-cyanide. During the exposure I observed the screen and determined the windownumber; after development, the window-number was also determined upon the photographic plate; and then both numbers were compared. The result of these experiments is that, using softer tubes (window-numbers 4-7), no difference could be observed; but when harder tubes were used it seemed to me that the window-number on the photographic plate was a little lower, at most one unit, than that determined by means of the fluorescent screen. This observation, however, although repeatedly confirmed, is not quite free from criticism, because the determination of the high window-numbers at the fluorescent screen is quite uncertain. The following result is, however, entirely certain. If we arrange, with the photometer described in 2, a hard and a soft tube so as to have the same brightness at the fluorescent screen, and if a photographic plate is substituted for the screen, we see after development of this plate that the half of the plate which received the rays from the hard tube is considerably less blackened than the other. The radiations which produce equal intensities of fluorescence have different photographic actions. In considering this result we must not leave out of account the fact that neither the fluorescent screen nor the photographic plate uses up completely the incident rays; both transmit many rays which can again produce fluorescent or photographic action.
