This is the broad overview of green technology I've been looking for. It is a bit lighter on the politics than most literature of this kind, which is not to say very much, but is more informative than it is polemic. The book is divided into sections including building design and materials, transportation options, and each of the major green energies. At the end of each section is a fairly detailed list of further sources. Each section conveys practical, concrete information: for instance, the number of watts generated by photovoltaic panels of a particular size, and guidelines for sizing the solar equipment necessary to power a house of a particular size. I would have liked to see more straightforward comparison of the cost to produce a unit of energy through solar, wind, or geothermal energy vs. the cost to produce that unit through burning natural gas, coal, or nuclear energy. This book takes the position that coal, gas, and nuclear energy are not options at all, without much examination, at the same time hinting that green energies will never produce as much power as conventional energy sources. But that's what you find when your authors are aesthetically attached to green energy, and not merely dispassionately interested in what is efficient and economical.
