An account of these campaigns, from 1692 inclusive, was published at the termination of each; that for 1691 was not compiled for many years after, which explains why the Scots Guards are styled " the Third Regiment." 1691. told them the enemy were already possessed of nearly all the strong places, and might quickly gain the remainder: he added, if divisions arose, or considerations of private interest became prevalent, the enemy would carry every thing before them. He said the time for deliberation was past, that union among the Allies was necessary, and that it was soldiers and powerful armies " that must do the work." With regard to himself, he declared he would spare neither his credit, troops, nor person, to co-operate with them in so just and necessary an undertaking; and that he would return in the spring to head his forces and redeem the pledge he had so solemnly given. March 6th. The King, on arriving at Loo with the Elector of Bavaria and the Duke of Zell, heard that Mons had been invested on the preceding day, and that Lewis the Fourteenth was hourly expected to carry on the siege in per Mar. 18th. son. William placed himself at the head of the army, between Brussels and Vilvorde; he then advanced and Mar. 30th. encamped in front of Halle. Mons surrendered after a Mar. 31st. siege of three weeks. William then reviewed his army, which had received reinforcements during the winter, and amongst them a second battalion of the Scots Guards1 from Scotland, and a battalion of Dutch Guards from England: it amounted to forty-five thousand five hundred and forty...
