I own at least one copy of just about every major bird guide for the US, this is my favorite for reference as it pulls in all the information that you'd otherwise have to peruse multiple references to obtain.

beautiful book
I already had the National geographic field guide when I stumbled across this volume ,which is a companion. It works really well with the field guide giving more information on each species plus a more in depth information on each bird family. plus some handy articles on identification. There are additional plates and photographs and the maps are a larger scale than the field guide but don't provide more information . They are just clearer. I just pick this book up and randomly pick a species and read as it is a great pleasure.I don't live in America and have only done limited birding whilst on holiday but the book makes me eager to visit and do some serious birding as it contains the whole birdlife of North America including the extreme vagrants not covered by the Field guide. I love the book and it's a steal at the price.
