In Mindplayers Ms Cadigan, on the cutting edge of things cyber,acquaints us with the punitive system of flushing out society's undesirables; the convicted lawbreaker is embedded with a more pliable and usable manufactured personality. This seems to be the answer to the prison population overflow. Society supplies the means for cyber replacement of the criminal element which, not suprisingly, breaks cyber usages.
As one would wipe clean a motherboard of familiar (brain-hardware) pathways, so a person's abilities are cleaned of undesirable traits(the mind--software); sometimes so completely that the personality is subsumed to its replacement."Soft" ware never has a chance: The premise is projected @ such breakneck speed that if you're not paying attention to the author's sophistries, you may need to reread. Not to worry!
What I especially like is the absence of dead space: you cannot relax your attention as to where she takes you, and why. SO RELAX! as you are literally drawn into her world. It won't hurt.
