One of very few frontier authors who have been mentioned in "The New York Times Book Review", which praised his "devastatingly assured writing", Don Coldsmith brings his remarkable storytelling skill to this book. Then a young shaman dreams of a spirit-horse bearing hat-like markings--and later witnesses the birth of the creature--he embarks upon a quest that presents many wonders, and not a few dangers, before he discovers the meaning of the colt with the medicine hat.

Don Coldsmith is by far one of the best western story tellers. He takes you back to the time when the first Americans were living and their ups and downs of everyday lives. He then takes you book by book into the time where the first foreigners stepped foot on the what they thought was an unpopulated land.
His way of telling the stories puts you into the lives of the occupants of this new land. Start this series "The Spanish Bid Saga" and you you too will enjoy the journey. I have every one of his books.

Let's go on a vision quest !
Pipe Bearer, called "Pup" by his young wife and close friends, is an apprentice medicine man to his grandfather Singing Wolf. Pup has a dream-a vision-of a horse with rare markings on its head. The markings resemble the hat worn by many holy men, an animals skin with part of its head and ears intact; therefore called a medicine hat. The very next day a colt is born to one of his mares and it has the rare medicine hat markings. Pup feels this is some kind of sign, and after discussing it with his grandfather, it is agreed that Pup will go on a vision quest to find out what his vision and the strange markings mean. His wife goes with him. They decide to pretend they are traders. Traders are like growers in the fact that they are accepted by everyone they meet. There is a great fire on the plains and Pup and his wife Otter Woman save another young couple from almost sure death. They become close friends and the new couple join Pup and his wife on his vision quest. This story is about all the adventures they have, and all the sights and people they run into. It has a suprising ending. If you like Coldsmith, you wii like this book.
