This is the story of the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans during the Second World War writ small. With photography by Adams (one of the greatest American photographers) and text by Hersey it is a masterwork. After reading this there is the abiding suspicion that the internment was engineered as a means of obtaining control of farms run by Japanese Americans, which, with their hard work and farming techniques, were becoming very successful.
In case it should be felt that a mere Brit is getting at the U.S. it has to be pointed out that the internment of German and Italian nationals was completely analogous. Despite it being pointed out that many worked in important defence establishments, Churchill's response was "Collar the lot!". Which led to a queue of important people along Downing Street demanding that their staff be released!
