Another great story by Gist. I learn a lot from her books. This one was set in Texas in the early days of the telephone and railroad. Georgie is a telephone operator, an employed single woman who lives in her own home. She is not allowed to vote, but she begins a society to educate people about birds and to ban the use of live birds on women's hats. Meanwhile a notorious train robber is still on the loose. Texas Ranger, Lucious Landrum has been trying to apprehend him. He changes his name to Luke Palmer and goes undercover as a telephone troubleman. Working in close proximity to the telephone operator is a distraction as sparks fly between them. The story has a lot of action, romance and surprise plot twists. Loved it.
