Quick Study
Getty Institute researcher does a great job of defining technical terms, but the bonus here is not only accuracy, clarity and brevity in that department, but also an engaging and unusual selection of illustrations, including (rare in this type of book) color photographs. With Gilles Mora's PHOTOSPEAK and Alan Trachtenberg's collection of historic writings on photography, a must have for any photo enthusiast or writer who has to do with photography.
