The armed men of the various tribes, who had Ref. dispersed or were dispersing to their respective inheritances, were hastily reassembled, and preparations made in accordance with the divine law, for visiting Deut.xui. with condign punishment this act of apparently bold Lev.xvii 8 rebellion, and thereby escaping, if possible, a ban i4. like that which had fallen on the whole congregation some seven years before, through the disobedience of Achan. But first in accordance with the same law, a deputation consisting of Phinehas, the high priest's son, and ten chosen heads of clans from the western tribes, was commissioned to cross the Jordan to Gilead, and demand an explanation of the deed. They addressed the representatives of their eastern brethren in words of stern and pathetic remonstrance; and the latter replied with solemn and earnest asseverations, disclaiming all intention of erecting an altar for sacrifice, and explaining the real object which they had in view. This frank avowal at once pacified the deputation from Shiloh, who with much emotion expressed their gratitude to God that He had not permitted the crime of idolatry to be committed in their midst. A reconciliation ended the conference, and the altar became a witness (Ed) between them, in a wider and fuller sense than had been originally designed.
