Samson's marriage--His feast and riddle--His first exploit against the Philistines. This and the two succeeding chapters are devoted to an account of some of the principal deeds of the Danite hero, whose history is thus related at greater length than that of any other of the Hebrew deliverers. They are remarkable for their success, their originality, their bitter humour, and their isolation. Samson is not a leader of others, but a solitary champion, endued Exod.xix.6. by the Spirit of God with a strength entirely superhuman, conditioned by his obedience to the vow which was upon him. In this he was a type of the nation, itself consecrated to Jehovah, and unconquerable as long as it remained faithful to Him, and no longer. His career was thus a striking parable; in its strength and weakness, in its changeful alternations of right and wrong doing. His first contact with the ruling race, when we may. suppose him to have been between twenty and thirty years of age, exhibits characteristic determination and Ref. perversity, reminding the reader of Esau's impetuous Gen xxvi 34 35 and wayward course. He became strongly attached to a young woman of Timnath, a Philistine and an idolatress. His parents remonstrated in vain; no other alliance could satisfy their son.
