Seller's Description:
Various. Very Good. A complete two volume set of 'Johnson's England', edited by A. S. Turberville Scarce in dustjacket. Copiously illustrated throughout both volumes, with one hundred and sixty illustrations, including two frontispieces. Samuel Johnson was an English author who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, novelist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". This two volume set contains twenty-seven essays written on varying topics in the "Age of Johnson". Covering roughly the sixty years between 1730 (just before Johnson came to London) and 1790 (just after his death) each essay examines the history and culture of this period, yet is rather more descriptive than critical or expository. The text instead strives to place its reader into the middle of the eighteenth century, and hence into the time in which Johnson lived and worked, making it an enjoyable and interesting read. In a cloth binding with original price-clipped dust wrappers. Externally, excellent. Small marks to spines. Slight rubbing to boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright. Inscription in biro to front free-endpaper of each volume. Dust Wrappers generally smart. Marks to spines and small closed tears to the tops and tails of the spines fo wraps. Two small holes to spine of wrap, volume I. Very Good.
