Johnson is best known for his 'A Dictionary of the English Language', and for being the subject of James Boswell's monumental biography. He is also known for being a distinguished man of letters, possibly the best letter writer in English history. Volume I, 1731-1772, illustrated with a frontispiece, and four leaves of plates.  Collated, complete. Volume II, 1773-1776, unopened in the original plastic. Volume III, 1777-1781,  unopened in the original plastic. Volume IV, 1782-1784, illustrated with a frontispiece, and four leaves of plates. Collated, complete. Volume V, appendixes and index, illustrated with a frontispiece. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrappers.
