The present work is the result of a suggestion by Professor Perry, F whose treatment of the theoretical portions of the subject I have followed; and I venture to think that, although in some cases it has seemed necessary to make use of elementary applications of the calculus, the proofs are simple, easy, and satisfactory. The student who does not possess the small amount of knowledge necessary to follow the reasoning, had better accept the results without proof than attempt to master those often given.
