The accurate answer is 3844. Example 40.---Find the square of 195-3. Setting the cursor over 195-3 on D, we read the number 3814 on A under the cursor. The rule for the number of digits is given on the next page. It is often better to multiply such a number by itself on the C and D scales, as the answer can be read more accurately. Eule for Finding the Square Boot of a Number.--As the operation is the inverse of squaring, the rule is readily obtained from that just given. The number whose square root is required is found by the cursor on the A scale, and under it on the D scale is found the square root of the number. As there are two sets of scales on A, it is necessary carefully to remember the following rule. f the square contains an even number of digits, find it on the right-hand end of A; if it contains an odd number of digits, find it on the left-hand scale of A. Example 41.--Find the square root of 26-54. Getting this number on the right-hand end of A scale, we read the answer 5-16 on D immediately under it. Bule for Number of Digits.--If the answer (i.e. the square) is found on the right-hand scale of A, the digits in the answer = the sum of the digits in the factors, i.e. = twice the number of digits in the original number. If the answer is found on the lefthand end of A, subtract 1 from the sum of the digits in the factors; in other words, take twice the number of digits in the original number minus 1. Symbolically this may be put d =--if square is found on left-hand; or d =--, if square is found on right hand end of A. d represents the digits in the square root, D the digits in the square.
