Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1815-81), Dean of Westminster, modelled this 1868 work, of which the third, revised edition of 1869 is reissued here, on his 1854 Historical Memorials of Canterbury (also available in this series). It was conceived as part of the celebration of the eight-hundredth anniversary of the consecration of the abbey in 1065, and consists of essays on aspects of the abbey's central role in English history, particularly as the coronation place of monarchs of England, and the location of many royal tombs. Stanley draws on both the manuscript archives of the abbey and on the work of earlier historians to consider its foundation, the coronations, the royal tombs, the other monuments to distinguished men and women, and the history of the abbey before and after the Reformation. This highly readable account will be of interest to anyone wanting to know more about one of England's greatest buildings.

Seller's Description:
Unnamed. Very Good. A fascinating history of the iconic London landmark Westminster Abbey, by the notable English churchman and academic Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. Arthur Penrhyn Stanley was the leading liberal theologian of his time in England and author of a number of popular works on Church History. Serving as the Dean of Westminster from 1864 to 1881, Stanley was a leading authority on the Gothic abbey church, as demonstrated within this work, his 'Memorials of Westminster Abbey'. Whilst occasionally inaccurate, the work contains a vast amount of information on the building and its history, clearly demonstrating Stanley's interest in (and attempts to preserve) the treasure of historic monuments in the building. A sixth edition copy, with 'the author's final revisions'. Copiously illustrated throughout In a straight grain morocco binding, with attractive marbled endpapers and textblock. In a full straight grain morocco binding, rebacked with boards and spine preserved. Externally, slightly rubbed to extremities. Scattered dark spotting to boards, more severe to front board. Front free endpaper detached but present. Prior tape repair to gutter of front pastedown. Rear hinge strained, but relatively firm. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to second free endpaper, dated '1949' and '95'. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout with the odd spot only to first and last few pages. Very Good.
