Ubuntu is a great way to take an old PC and have it up and running as a 2nd computer in no time. You can often just pop in a CD, have it load "live" to see if it can install on your machine and find all your hardware, and then finally go ahead with the install if you like what you see. It is free from viruses, like the Mac. It has a very simple interface, even simpler than the Mac. It comes with a free office package (OpenOffice.Org) already installed, unlike the Mac. And it runs on computers of yesterday which is certainly more than one can say about XP. Vista doesn't even run on the computers of today . . . So what's the problem? There are many *beginning* Ubuntu books. But Ubuntu is fairly simple so you really only need one of those. The Official Ubuntu book is in fact very good. There is a dearth of more advanced books. For a more advanced book, I think this is even better than Ubuntu Hacks which is from the very respected publisher, O'Reilly. This book contains information on setting up a RAID array. You can put two matching drives in a computer and have data duplicated across both to prevent loss in the event of a drive failure. The book contains information on setting up a server drive. I have a WiFi network and an Ubuntu server can be accessed by both Macs and PC using Samba. There is much more here. Please share what you find in this book with your own review.
