As you'd expect from Nigel Slater, this is a well-written book with mostly simple and quick recipes that can either be made from stuff you're likely to have at home (I bought it four weeks into lockdown) or can be made as effectively with the odd substitution, as he explains. Which is why I bought it.
I tend to buy recipe books, and make maybe one or two and after that they get abandoned. This is different - this and its companion volume are changing the way I cook!
The recipes are based on greenery, but it's not a vegetarian / vegan book as such - no effort is made to attempt to sell it on this front and I appreciate it for that. Rather it is a quality book that happens to not use meat, but you could easily chuck the odd bit in if you fancy.
While this is ostensibly a spring/summer book, many of the recipes would be equally at home in his autumn/winter version - I do like the way they are split into the two seasonal books, but I would recommend getting both as they work well as a pair.
I love the look of the book too. The inclusion of a bookmark is really appreciated and the attached dust cover on the lower half a brilliant idea. The explanation by the artist about the 'strokes' going through is perhaps a little much for a cynic like myself, it's a nice touch and the book as a whole looks and feels great.
