Barnard's interests as a picture-maker were uniquely varied. His 1853 daguerreotypes of a dramatic mill fire in Oswego, New York, are among the first news photographs ever made. He was also an early advocate of the use of photography for artistic and expressive purposes. His 1866 album, Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, has long been recognized as a documentary and artistic landmark in the history of photography.
