Owing to the extent of the subject and to the rather wide scope of the work, it has been found necessary to divide the matter into two sections, each in a separate volume, the present one dealing entirely with ferrous materials, and the second volume with non-ferrous and organic materials. The present work covers a wide range, and may be regarded as containing the more directly useful information and data from a large number of specialist books upon the subjects treated, supplemented by modern data, kindly supplied by the leading manufacturers in this and other countries, and by the inclusion of matter derived from the current and past proceedings of various societies and institutions.
