So ergab sich f???r mich eine zweifache Aufgabe: einmal wollte ich dem Freunde des Gedichtes eine handliche Ausgabe mit Erkl???rung aller sachlichen Punkte vorlegen; dann aber strebte ich danach, auch den smachlichen stilistischen und metrischen Eigent???mlich keiten des Verfassers gerecht zu werden und sie durch den Vergleich mit andern Schriftstellern in das richtige Licht zu setzen. Wenn ich dabei in der Anf???hrung von Parallelstellen z. T. Zu weit gegangen sein mag, so will ich mich nicht mit dem Vorbild der Herausgeber der lat. Ecclesiasten oder der monumenta Germaniac decken, son dem nur den Wert solcher Belege gerade f???r diese sp???tern, nur wenig erforschten Schriftwerke betonen; gestatten sie doch allein, die Autoren der niedergehenden Periode auf ihren eigenen Wert hin zu pr???fen und das unmittel bare Eigentum des einzelnen von dem entliehenen Gut sondern zu lernen. Jede Verwertung antiker Gedanken, sei sie Verbesserung oder Verw???sserung, l???sst des Dichters Bef???higung und Arbeitsweise heller hervortreten. Auch f???r die Erkenntnis, welche Schriftsteller im 4. Jahrhundert in Gallien noch in den H???nden des gebildeten Publikums waren ist dieser Quellennachweis nicht unlohnend wie.
