Da man aber auf diesem Wege doch nicht zum Ziel gelaugte und auch bei dem besten auf einem Merkmal gebauten System Objekte auseinander gerissen wurden, welche dem ganzen ubrigen Habitus nach zusammengehorten und wiederum andere zusammengefasst werden mussten, weil sie in dem einen Merkmal zufallig ubereinstimmten, wahrend sie doch in allen ubrigen von einander abwichen, so verliess man diese Methode ganz und schlug einen andern Weg ein, der zu der jetzt gebrauchlichen naturlichen Eintheilung fuhrte. Danach beobachtet man zunachst auf das Sorgfaltigste alle Merkmale der einzutheilenden Gegenstande und stellt diejenigen in naturliche Gruppen zusammen, welche in allen am meisten ubereinstimmen, so dass die daran vorkommenden Abweichungen nur geringe Variationen der vorhandenen Eigenschaften sind, und die nachst verwandte Gruppe darin schon weit bedeutendere zeigt als die in jeder zusammengefassten Gegenstande unter sich. Dann setzt man dasselbe Verfahren an den so gebildeten naturlich abgegrenzten Gruppen ganz in derselben Weise fort und gelangt so allmalich zu den ubergeordneten Gattungen, Familien, Ordnungen u. s. w., welche daher ebenso den Charakter naturlicher Verwandtschaft an sich tragen.
