In this book the fantasy of a second chance becomes reality for Kate, whose high school boyfriend Jake dumps her by not showing up to prom and leaving town. He resurfaces in Hollywood as a huge rock star via a string of hit songs, all seemingly based on the intimate details of his relationship with Kate.
When Jake returns to their hometown, Kate also returns, fully prepared to hold him accountable for the long list of humiliations he has subjected her to for the past thirteen years.
I laughed out loud in so many places. The inside of Kate?s head is a wild, crazy, yet disturbingly familiar place. My memories precisely mimic the authors? descriptions of raiding my parents? closets and meticulously piecing together elaborate outfits but never looking quite as great as Molly Ringwald.
The characters are endearing. Kate is smart, quick-witted, and funny. Laura is the best kind of best friend - supportive, encouraging, fearless and honest. Jake is infuriatingly charming.
We get one tidy bit of satisfaction in that the Barbie that made the girls so miserable (every school has one) ends up managing a convenience store while Kate is an exec for a sustainable environment managing company. (Hee!) But that is the only tidy wrap-up. Resolving the other high school horrors is slightly more complicated for Kate.
McLaughlin also wrote The Nanny Diaries, which I absolutely yawned through, despite its rave reviews. Stories of rich people fumbling aimlessly through their own excess are funny to me for about 50 pages, then I just get sad.
On the other hand, hanging out with Kate for 200+ pages while her emotions bounced around between regret and revenge was all of embarrassing, cathartic, and very entertaining.
