Wenn ich es dennoch versucht 'habe, so sind es drei Umst???nde gewesen, die meinen Entschluss zur Reife gebracht haben. Erstens war es das Bedauern, das mich erf???llte, dass jeder Studirende oder Lernende in der heutigen Zeit nicht nur in den gebrauch lichen mythologischen Handb???chern, sondern selbst in philo logischen Commentaren statt griechischer Vorstellungen jene abgeleierten physischen Novellen zu lesen bekommt, die den einsam Segelnden sofort in eine Klippenmasse unerweisbarer Hypothesen hineinjagen. Zweitens reizte mich das auf jeder Seite nachweisbar unkritische Verfahren dieser Mythologen, die bald eine zweifelhafte Etymologie als Basis einer gross artigen Erkl???rung benutzen, bald sich in unl???sbare Wider spr???che verwickeln bald, um eine Behauptung aufrecht zu erhalten, werthlose Notizen der christlichen Jahrhunderte her beiziehen. Aber auch abgesehen von diesen Fehlern scheint es mir nicht in allen F???llen sicher, nur aus der Etymologie die Bedeutung eines Mythus zu erforschen, weil erst der Nach weis gef???hrt werden muss, dass, als jene Sagen oder W???rter entstanden, das etymologische Verst???ndnise daf???r bei der Menge oder bei dem Dichter vorhanden war, was fast niemals mit Sicherheit dargethan werden kann.
