If you are interested in historical non-fiction written in a very readable style, you'd find this book a fascinating read. The author attempts to inform the British of Hitler's round-up of the Jews in Poland and Warsaw, where the Polish underground has been isolated from outside communication. He makes a secret trip in a plane bound for London, nearly freezing to death while hiding as a stealth "passenger." He tries to get his desperate message to Churchill but is put off and not taken seriously . . . meanwhile, England shelters Polish Royalty who are isolated from the war. It is heartbreaking to learn that nothing was done to help the Polish people in their plight. Hitler and the Russian army overtook the country, and the author tells in stark detail what happened to the people in Warsaw as they ried to escape through the sewer corridors. Scenes from the movie, The Pianist, verify the horrors of this part of history. I had loaned out my copy of this book years ago, and was glad to find it a copy through Alibis to read again. In the early 1900s my grandparents emigrated to America from Warsaw and Eastern Poland and lost all contact with the relatives during the war.( I keep looking for familiar names and referenes in such writings.)
