There is enormous interest in Maharishi Ayur Veda (MAV), or Indian Traditional Medicine, in the USA, not least because of its incorporation of Transcendental Meditation. However, this is not the only therapeutic aspect of MAV. In the 1950's the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi collected information from the classic texts and formed a modern, coherent approach (first published in the West by Penguin). A large amount of medical and science-based research has been undertaken specifically on aspects of MAV. This book aims to present a coherent exploration and review of both the principles and practice of MAV, as well as the research outcomes which support and illuminate practice. It is not a treatment manual, but it does present a foundation for understanding the principles and practice of MAV, both within specific medical specialties and generally in health promotion and disease prevention. Particularly in the USA there has been an enormous growth in interest in MAV as a complementary medicine system The text presents a clear description of the fundamentals of this whole system as now adapted and practised in the West Aimed at a medical readership -- written by doctors trained in Western medicine Structured to be accessible and to cover areas of specific interest to specialist Western medical professionals Offers the medic a basis on which to make referral decisions or to understand what a patient may already have tried Strong focus on disease prevention and health promotion -- aspects fundamental to MAV and of growing attention in the West Heavily referenced so readers can undertake further reading and be confident of the validity of specific claims Part of Medical Guides to Complementary and Alternative Medicine series
