All this and a great deal more we have from his own sketch of his early days in David Copperfield. When a very little fellow he had made several attempts at dramatic writing, or, as he says in his preface to a later edition of the Sketchy by Boa, They (the sketches) comprise my first attempts at authorship - with the exception of certain tragedies achieved at the mature age of eight or ten, and represented with great applause to overflowing nurseries. He had already become famous in his own childish circle as a good teller of a story, and an especially good singer of comic songs. Writing to Wilkie Collins in 1856, in answer to some enquiries as to his early years, he says: I had been a writer when I was a mere baby, and always an actor from the same age.
