An excellent application of a famous epigram. The past hour justly belonged to the author of the Commentaries, and we have given it to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. It is nearly time for the bell, but I will mention to you a plan which I have been thinking of, and which I shall probably adopt: There are many things I wish to say to you not directly connected with your lessons. To avoid in future the mistake I have made today, it is my intention to set apart ten or fifteen minutes every Wednesday morning, not for set lessons, but for miscellaneous Talks. The time thus appropriated will be taken equitably from the various branches of study, and no one of them need to suffer perceptibly. But whether they suffer or not, I shall feel that I am doing no wrong; and certainly no one can doubt the impor tance of questions of conduct and motive in a school which professes to form character as well as to train the intellect. If I should adopt this plan, I cordially invite you all to join freely with me in the discussions, to suggest topics, to ask questions, and to feel no hesitation whatever in ex pressing dissent from anything that may be said, - hon est dissent I mean, of course. I hope no one will ever take part in a discussion simply to carry his point and win a victory, or merely to make a display of his skill at logical fencing.
