I enjoy pretty much everything McManus produces, from columns, to books, to plays. Avalanche kept me intrigued but I have to say it was a little confusing for this 'flatlander' to follow. Although Pat always does a wonderful job of allowing the reader to use their imagination to personalize characters and props, while reading this book I realized that my 'mountain imagination' is limited to my experiences in climbing stairs. I had to re-read some passages three or four times before I could get water to flow downhill, get a skier to follow the laws of gravity, or sort out scenario from sarcasm. If you're reading this Pat, please send me a topographical map! Thanks!

Pat Is getting the hang of it
Patrick McManus is probably one of the best short story humor writers in America. Now he is proving that he is capable of more than that genre. Avalanche has all the elements of a good mystery with Pat dropping clues and humor as the reader proceeds through the story. The ending is reasonable and leaves the reader completely satisfied. The language is simple, the description sufficient for the reader to put himself in place, and one walks away in the full knowledge he has read a good story by a talented writer. My copy is already making the rounds and I may have to buy another copy to be sure my McManus collection is complete.
