Book is mainly oils, mainly still life. Tonal painting is not natural to me, and I found this book invaluable. I've read other books concentrating on tone, but this was the one I found easiest to learn from. Though mainly oil still lifes, it also has some landscape, and some watercolour examples from other painters, and one pastel by the author. This is a book in the traditional 'old master' type of style, with dramatic darks and the lights just jumping out from the pages. The pity is that it is, I believe, out of print, but in my opinion, tracking down a copy was well worth the trouble, especially when I could no longer keep on borrowing it from the local library. That my paintings are not now so flat looking, is I believe, in a large part due to this book alone.
