Carol Matthau epitomizes a kind of glamour not known today--a prized original in both New York and Hollywood. In her inimitable voice--sly, unflinching, incisive, hilarious--she tells her stories of the company she's kept; the husbands she's had (William Saroyan and Walter Matthau); and the life she's lived.

Among The Porcupines, a book by Carol Matthau, is an absorbing read. She uses sentences as instruments to weave her tale with a surgeon's precision. Her obvious honesty is, at times, so refreshing that it quickens the speed of the eye to the next paragraph. It can truly be said that this book has been a memorable occasion for this reader. Her friendships with Gloria Vanderbilt and Oona Chaplin are lovingly described and dissected, as with Truman Capote. Sometimes her honesty about her beloved husband appears almost brutal, but her obvious adoration of him tempers it and simply makes the actor appear a very interesting, complex but a rather lovable human being. I recommend this book one hundred percent for those who lean towards the 'below the skin' memoir.
