The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is the overt, near chauvinism in the book. Heritage plays a part as the man is Greek. It allows leiniency for his tendency and blantent disregard of women at times. His is not disgraceful, by any means. However, he is a bit on the side that is almost seeing women as possessions. Now, many books of Howard's rely on the male hero finding and "possessing" his mate (mind, body and soul). In fact, premise and basis to many love stories it usually fits. This time, it seems a bit harsh as he actually has the means to squire the gal away and make her a prisoner on an island without a forseeable end in sight and it is never belied in the story he will bend (as many times the hero ends up doing). While many other stories start with the same premise, many flow through and allow more as time goes - this gent just continues on his hard line and really does not appear to allow for other human feelings- especially of the female he believes is blackmailing him for his money. This man seems to believe it is more than primal, but his right as a man and a mans place in the universe. A great read, yet that barrier bites me a bit. STILL, recommended as the story is great throughout and the heroine's story is unusual from her first marriage and the gossip surrounding it, to the ultimate surprise of her Greek God when he learns a bit of surprising truth on their wedding day. Ultimate pride vs. pride story that nearly tatters the loves of both while heading toward and acceptance one does not expect.
