For the beginning of the next age necessarily awaits the completion of the work which, in God's great plan (formed before the creation of the world), has been assigned to the age in which we are now living. But, apart from that, God's present work is of surpassing interest, and it is the privilege of those who are of the faith of Jesus Christ to look into it and observe its progress. As a suitable starting point for the study of this part of our subject, we turn to Matthew 16, verses 13 to 28. In those verses we shall find again the three eras of our Lord's history, and also shall find, in His own words, a brief statement of what belongs to each of these three periods. The passage is one of the most important in the Bible, and no amount of study can exhaust its contents: "When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I, the Son of man, am? And they said, Some say that Thou art John the Baptist; some Elias; and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.' The answer reveals the dense spiritual darkness of the nation, particularly of the respectable and educated part thereof, including the scribes and doctors of the law. As Paul said, at a later day, "they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew Him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning Him" (Acts 13: 27).
